Curatorial Rationale:

In this exhibition I wanted to portray memories that would explore the concepts of youth, innocence and joy, and how they are intertwined. The backgrounds and colors would serve as a form of expression that add to the main persona in the artwork. I have taken varied influences from personal life experiences that remind me of a time of joyful innocence.

A large amount of my pieces have nature incorporated into them. Nature in my artworks is used to represent purity. This directly correlates to innocence, due to how pure a person’s mind can be. Nature is often used to depict and surround pure creatures and thus I used it to surround many of my artworks to exhibit the same effect. There is also a bright tone in most of my artworks to match the livelihood and purity of nature. Such as in “Sisterly Love,” there are large bright tones, such as the background, a bright bush. In addition to the flowers with the white accents, help with making the artwork bright and lighter. Thus playing into the purity of nature, through the white accents that help support the idea of innocence. I use a similar concept in the use of watercolors, since the colors can be diluted to make the paint less concentrated and appear lighter on the paper. This is portrayed in both the “Winter Spirit ” and “Sol and Luna” where there is a varied use of concentration but are mainly used in the lighter tone area.

Another important aspect of the artwork is the consistency of pairs through the artworks, which shows the need of guidance and reassurance, in these situations. Which creates a sense of naiveness from the subject of the artwork. But it also brings to light the joyful narrative of innocence when shared among others. And those that are more focused on the individual, instead show the perspective and connect they have towards the nature they are surrounded by. But both perspectives provide connections that are pure and innocent.

In my exhibition, I lay out my work revolving around the “Sisterly Love” artwork. They would be laid out in a similar way that they are laid down on the website. The reason I would have “Sisterly Love” displayed in the middle would be because of how well I believe it conveys this message. Through the simplicity of the girls sharing a cupcake at the park, the bright feelings are emphasized. In addition, the pink lines in the artwork are reaching out and extending to the sides. Thus, it is like its reaching out towards the other paintings and expressing the innocence and the other feelings that are acquired with it.  And I felt that this would be able to ground my concept.
